Monarez confirmed amid efforts to cut agency budget by 54%
Today, just two days after Dr. Susan Monarez was confirmed as the CDC Director, a congressional subcommittee begins marking up the FY26 budget, which would cut CDC’s funding by 54%. The question now is whether Director Monarez will fight to fund the agency or go along with Kennedy’s plans to gut it.
A team of data scientists created the CDC Data Project (www.cdcdataproject.org) to show the full impact these cuts will have on programs, down to state and programmatic levels.
The dashboard has already been cited in congressional hearings, including those of both Secretary Kennedy and Director Monarez
The proposed budget eliminates programs that track and combat America's leading killers (obesity, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, smoking, and more). Public health departments, hospitals, universities, and nonprofits stand to lose the most, as 80% of CDC’s funding is dispersed to state and local partners. These cuts are in addition to another wave of HHS rescissions expected this month, which could claw back billions more in already allocated funds.
If you’re covering these developments, we’d be glad to connect you with the team behind the CDC Data Project.
